Procedure
- The skin cancer is completely excised and the resulting defect is reconstructed with a skin graft or skin flap, depending on the size and location of the resulting defect
Recovery
- Swelling and bruising affecting the surgical site peak at 2 days after surgery and rapidly resolve over the next 2 weeks
- Incisions are healed by 2 weeks
- Return to work the following day, but no strenuous activity or contact sports for 2 weeks
- Subtle swelling may persist for up to 6 months
Result
- Eradication of skin cancer
Risks
- Infection, hematoma, scarring
- Residual asymmetry or deformity
- Recurrence or spread of cancer
